THE PRADA FOUNDATION

‘Culture should help us with our everyday lives, and understand how we, and the world, are changing through literature, cinema, music, philosophy, art and science.’
This assumption is the key factor in the Prada Foundation’s activities and thought behind Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli choice in artwork – mostly from the XX and XXI century, and location – a former distillery dating back to 1910.

Since 1994 the non profit Prada Foundation has been very active in the avant guarde Milan art scene organizing two major international shows each year as well as conferences, film festivals and publishing over 30 books on art and architecture.

The Prada Foundation Tour gives you a chance to discover the history behind Prada’s success as well as visit the complex. Today The Prada Foundation is housed in a former industrial building in the trendy Porta Romana district just south of central Milan that AMO, the research arm for Dutch Architect Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture was commissioned to renovate. Prada has worked with Koolhaas on several projects, like that of the SoHo store in New York. Apart from the renovation of the six former industrial buildings for a total of 17,5 square meters in Largo Isarco, OMA will also be inaugurating a brand new 6 storey tower with a surface area of 10 000 square meters on the same site. The result is the so-defined golden outskirt, into a signature complex sure to inspire art and architecture lovers alike. The permanent collection is a showcase of Prada and Bertellis’s personal heritage and taste in art, the history of the collections as well as several exciting temporary exhibits all year through.

After the tour of The Prada Foundation, it is possible to have lunch at the retro-chic Bar Luce designed by the filmmaker Wes Anderson. Inspired by 1950s and 60s Milanese cafes and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, the design features pastel colours, vaulted ceiling, wooden panelling and Formica furniture, making it a trendy and creative spot.
