Saragozza Expo 2008

“Water and Sustainable Development” was the ambitious theme of Expo 2008 in Saragozza. But only 5.7 million visitors attended, 2 million less than expected. Investment totalled 2.5 billion for the three-month event which saw 106 countries as exhibitors.

The site, covering an area of approximately 2.5 square kilometres, was readied in a record time of only three years on the banks of the Ebro river. The constructions still in use include an Acquarium with 300 species from the world’s five greatest rivers, the 76 m-tall Torre del Agua designed by Enrique de Teresa housing a digitally-formed sculpture, and the 270 m bridge-pavilion by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid which linked the La Almozara district with the Expo site.
