Shanghai Expo 2010

Expo Shanghai 2010 was the exhibition of the records: with $ 53 billion invested it had the most spectacular and expensive exposure ever staged in Expo history; it was the largest exhibition site ever made, about 5,3 km2, conceived on the banks of the Huangpu River that runs through the city, all in all a huge success, with 73 million visitors. The mascot of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 was called Haibao, “the treasure of the sea”, a typical Chinese name indicating that the real protagonists of the Expo 2010 are the people who relate with the world and with others, creating a better society for a better life. Better city, better life is the theme of the Shanghai Expo, which improves the quality of life in urban areas. The exhibition halls were located on both banks of the Huangpu River that runs through Shanghai, with an exposure of 192 countries and 50 inetrnational organizations. Some structures built within the areas became permanent: China Pavillion, which portrays the traditional crown eastern China and the whole structure is painted in classic red Forbidden City; Expo Boulevard, the main avenue of the Exhibition, characterized by a tensile structure of about 65,000 square meters; the World Expo Centre and the Expo Performance Centre. Within the site there were five thematic pavillions: Urbanian, where six real families of various continents were confronted with development issues and the needs of people in the urban context; Being city in which the city was compared to a living being made of flesh, bone and soul, with a bloodstream that worked perfectly;Urban planet, which focused on ecological problems caused by urban development and the possible solutions to this problem; Imprint, where the birth and growth of cities and the problems risen by the Industrial Revolution were represented; and Future an interactive exhibition about how the city of the future could be, with displaying related movies, books and sculptures dedicated. Inside the exhibition of Expo 2010 there was a zone dedicated to the Urban Best Practices and the most significant experiences in urban areas. To display this area, 49 projects proposed by cities and regions around the world, were chosen.
